Director / Folklorist

Denise Markhame

As director of Verte-alerte/Green-Up, I create programming and build the team of other like-minded activists. Alongside these team members I host outdoor programs of an environmental nature; this work incorporates my vocation as a folklorist. In 2021, I will release a video series of simple, affordable, easily digestible tips for greening-up our global lifestyle, available via my Patreon page.
Since 2017, I have worked with the La Pêche Earth Day committee, and in 2019 assumed the role of director.
I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Music & Theatre. I am a veteran Canadian Storyteller of Franco-Ontarian heritage, with forty-six years’ experience in the performing arts, including sixteen years in the agro-tourism industry here in the Outaouais. My work in the literary field has included: Head Librarian for the Montreal Children’s Library’s Richmond Square Branch, and Program Animator in three branches; guest lecturer on the subject of Storytelling, including five years with McGill University’s Education Department.
Awaiting publication are two picture books (one in English/one in French), and my teachers’ guide to traditional Story, entitled: Seven x Seven Trees.

Becoming familiar with our native woody plant species, along with the respective cultural, economic, and medicinal attributes of each, fosters a greater appreciation of the natural world in general, and promotes a heartfelt recognition of the impact of our choices on its well-being. »
